Today, Germany is the engine of the European economy and one of the world’s leading powers. On its soil, Germany holds a variety of destinations known worldwide for their art, vibrant cultural scene and historical significance.

In terms of nature, the main attractions are the Alps, the Black Forest in the south with its lakes and valleys, the central highlands and the coasts of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea, where numerous seaside resorts are located, mostly visited by local tourists, as international visitors prefer the larger attractions and especially the big cities.

Charlemagne, king of the Franks, was crowned first Holy Roman Emperor on Christmas Day 800 AD by Pope Leo III. Charlemagne is often associated with France, but his kingdom was vast; his capital was at Aix la Chapelle, known today in German as Aachen . The remains of Charlemagne’s imperial winter palace (the Kaiserpfalz) can be seen in the town of Ingelheim. The roots of modern German history and culture go back to the post-Carolingian Holy Roman Empire.
