The benefits that dental radiology has brought to improve the quality of life of people all over the world are well known, however, we are also aware of the risks associated with its use. To reduce these risks, different international organizations have developed a RADIOLOGICAL PROTECTION SYSTEM (RPS) based on the principles of: justification, optimization and dose limitation, which in turn have evolved based on the development of science, ethical values and the experience accumulated in the daily practice of radiation protection professionals. When reviewing the regulations governing the use of ionizing radiation in Chile, we analyzed that ethical aspects or values are not taken into account when discussing and applying the SPR in dental radiology procedures. For all of the above reasons, the objective of the present narrative review work was to elaborate a new consultation document for dentists, which contains in a summarized manner and with precise definitions, the main aspects to be taken into account when understanding how the PRS works and the ethical values that underlie it, thus helping to objectively resolve the value judgments that may arise during the request, execution and interpretation of dental radiology procedures.
