In many research laboratories it is normal to have a regular meeting, weekly for example, at which all sorts of issues are discussed and there is usually a short presentation. A frequent and well-structured meeting can be a vital part of the life of a research group, and one of the ‘markers’ of a good group leader.
Although most investigators are trained early on in the culture of group meetings, it is far from the same in all labs, and can be an important issue for investigators who are just setting up their group or for those who are wondering if their usual routine has aspects that could be improved. Every PI and every group has its particularities and not everything works equally well everywhere, although some general guidelines may help:
The group meeting is also a good time to discuss results informally. It is usual for the meeting to include a short presentation on work in progress by PhD students or postdocs, with more or less raw results. It is important that this moment is helpful for the presenting researcher to improve his work, to advance in the interpretation of his results, in the planning of future experiments, etc., but that when errors are highlighted it is always to propose and discuss solutions. The PI himself or someone in the group should be in charge of organizing the rotation of presentations. It may be a good rule that when someone joins the group, or those doing a research stay in the group, make a presentation as soon as possible about their previous work and experience. It is also possible to take advantage of the short visit of other researchers to propose them to make a presentation of their work in our group, although then the meeting format should be changed and adapted to a more formal presentation.
They also carry out an extensive training and dissemination activity, highlighting the Master’s Degree in Science and Technology from Space and the PhD program in Space Research and Astrobiology that is taught jointly with the Center for Astrobiology (CAB) of INTA-CSIC.
The group includes PhDs in physics and engineering, PhD students, engineers (in electronics, computer science, industrial and telecommunications) and programmers. All of them belong to the Departments of Automatics and Physics and Mathematics. These factors provide the group with a great potential to cover both scientific and technological aspects in the development of space missions.
During this period of time we carried out research projects in collaboration with national and foreign institutions. Among them the IFIC of the University of Valencia, the Physics Department of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, the Institute for Advanced Studies in Dublin, the HH Wills Physics Laboratory of the University of Bristol and the Space Sciences Department of the European Space Agency (ESA).
