We are currently involved in conjunction with local communities and groups in the defense and protection of hundreds of thousands of hectares of terrestrial and marine ecosystems of international importance that provide environmental services of exceptional value to local communities. From the Center office operates the Human Rights Coordination that works with a cross-cutting approach for all offices, with the objective that the defense of the environment is carried out from a Human Rights approach and development projects take into account from the beginning the obligation to guarantee the right to information, consultation and participation of communities.
In particular, we seek to focus on the development and effective application of environmental policy instruments for the conservation, protection and sustainable use of the region’s natural resources, mainly in the areas of urban development, forests, water, protected natural areas and wildlife.

Javier ESPARCIA es Doctor en Geografía por la Universidad de Valencia (1990) y en Sociología por la Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona (2017), llegando a ser Profesor Titular (1990) y finalmente Catedrático de Geografía (habilitación nacional en junio de 2004, efectiva en enero de 2006) en la misma Universidad, a la que está vinculado.
Tras su doctorado en Geografía (1990, Universidad de Valencia), en septiembre de 2017 ha finalizado con Cum Laude su doctorado en Sociología (Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona), defendiendo su segunda tesis doctoral, sobre “Capital social y desarrollo territorial: Redes sociales y liderazgo en las nuevas dinámicas rurales en España”.
Actualmente es coordinador interuniversitario del Programa de Doctorado Desarrollo Local y Cooperación Internacional, y editor de la Revista de Estudios sobre Despoblación y Desarrollo Rural-AGER (canal de Youtube de AGER).
Actualmente cuenta con cinco complementos (seis años cada uno) de productividad investigadora (evaluaciones positivas). Ha sido gestor del Programa Nacional de I+D+i en Ciencias Sociales (2004-2009) (Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Secretaría de Estado de Investigación, Desarrollo e Innovación); representante español en la European Science Foundation-ESF (Comité de Dirección [2005/2007] y Comité Permanente de Ciencias Sociales [2007-2013]); miembro de la Comisión Nacional de Evaluación de la Actividad Investigadora -CNEAI- (2013-2015); y coordinador de área en la Fundación Española para la Ciencia y la Tecnología -FECYT- (2016), y evaluador de revistas científicas durante varios años. Es miembro del Colegio de Miembros del Panel de Revisión del FSE y del Panel de Expertos H2020 de la Comisión Europea. De 2016 a 2021 presidió la Comisión de Acreditación de Profesorado Universitario E-19 de la ANECA. Desde 2018 es evaluador en el Comité de Disciplina de Ciencias Sociales de la Fundación Científica Checa.
