In 1859 the archaeologist José Amador de los Ríos, in his entrance speech to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, used for the first time the concept of “Mudejar style” to refer to Christian churches and palaces made with techniques and decorative repertoires reminiscent of those of Hispano-Muslim architecture (tiling, plasterwork, horseshoe arches…).
Before referring to these great works of the 19th and 20th centuries, it is essential that we list those features that are typical of the Mudejar style. To illustrate them we can take as references the churches of San Nicolás (12th-15th century) and San Pedro el Viejo (14th century) and the Palacio de los Lujanes (15th century), in the Plaza de la Villa, or some architectural elements, such as arches, vaults and doors, preserved and exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum. And we can even visit the auditorium and the chapel of the University of Alcalá de Henares, the synagogues of Santa María la Blanca and El Tránsito in Toledo, or the Monastery of San Antonio El Real and the Alcázar of Segovia.

Furthermore, an unavoidable question is the relationship of this Degree with an environment such as the one offered by the city and province of Cordoba, where the material and documentary testimonies of the past constitute one of the main values for cultural development and a reference as a driving force for the dynamization of tourism and local development. It would not be understood that a World Heritage City, such as this one, would not have a Degree in History, or that a province with the needs of local development that ours has, based on the protection, conservation and enhancement of cultural and natural heritage, would not make available to society a Degree in History.
