The Norman Paterson School of International Affairs (NPSIA) is a professional school of international relations at Carleton University, which was founded in 1965. The school is located in a building near the river on the Carleton Campus in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. NPSIA students, alumni and faculty are known as NPSIAns.
Carleton University President Davidson Dunton announced the creation of an international school of international relations on February 18, 1965. The school was established, in part, because Senator Norman Paterson[3] gave $400,000 for its creation. Businessman Paterson, who made his fortune in the shipping and grain industry, was also a member of Carleton’s board of trustees, and had previously donated $500,000 to Carleton College.[4] At its inception, the college was named “The College of International Relations”. But in 1974, it was renamed in honor of its principal investor, Senator Paterson.[5]

Escobar Olivo believes that her status as a second-generation immigrant made her experience firsthand some of the difficulties shared by the 60 young Latin Americans interviewed during the research.
I had to come to the university to find a professor who represented my culture and my origins. Several young people don’t get to that level because they don’t know if opportunities will be presented to them or not. They have never had examples that it is possible. Feeling ethnically and culturally represented is an example that you can go far and that you can aspire to succeed.
This study, which was conducted under the auspices of Verónica Escobar’s professor and mentor, Henry Parada, and with the collaboration of Fabiola Limón Bravo, all from Ryerson University in Ontario, wanted to explore, among other things, the importance that young people give to the presence of a Latin American professor or teacher in their study trajectory.
For Escobar Olivo, this example is revealing because many young Latin-Canadians never have the opportunity to find a teacher with whom they can identify and have not seen that representation in the educational system.
