Bernard, who dropped out of high school and was able to go to university without finishing high school, got a job working at Carleton University in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. She began taking classes from 1971 to 1973. In 1976, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta in Edmonton.

While pursuing her PhD, she worked as a labor historian for the Telecommunications Workers Union in 1980. She left this position in 1982. From 1984 to 1986, Bernard was a labour historian for the Brewery, Cellar and Distillery Workers Union (now part of the Government and Service Employees Union of British Columbia).

Bernard is a member of the Canadian Research Institute for the Advancement of Women (CRIAW), the Society of Canadian Women in Science and Technology (SCWIST), the Labour and Employment Relations Association and the United Association for Labour Education.

And we continue with the same momentum: after the submission, at the end of 2015, of the documentation corresponding to the self-evaluation process, with a view to academic accreditation by the undergraduate programs in Anthropology, Philosophy, Geography, History, Psychology, Sociology and Social Work (which are part of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences); Archaeology and Museology (which belong to the Faculty of Heritage Studies) and Social Communication – Journalism – after opening the first master’s degree program in Political Communication in Colombia – the Externado will have achieved, in the course of 2016, the official quality seal of the Colombian State for 16 of the 17 programs it offers.

This effort to face a world marked by fierce competition, results in other good news: in June 2012 the Externado ranked fourth in the ranking of the 10 best higher education institutions in the country, with a score of 95.34, according to the report “Elements of Quality in Higher Education”.
