Demi Lovato: Simply Complicated – Official Documentary

It owes its name to the area’s first government agent, William Eddy Banfield. The spelling of the surname «Bamfield» with an «m» is said to be due to the difficulties the local population had in pronouncing the letter n in their name, or a mistake made by the postal entity. In 1902 the first telegraph cable station was built as part of the All Red Line and connected with the countries and territories controlled by the British Empire in a submarine way. A second building, this time made of concrete, was built in 1926 replacing the old wooden structure. This building, declared a historic site in 1930, now houses the Bamfield Marine Science Center.

In 1953 the telegraph was extended from Alberni Inlet to Port Alberni, while the local station was closed on June 20, 1959. After the closure, only the large concrete building, two storage tanks and an adjacent building survived; everything else was demolished.

Commercial fishing was present until the mid-1980s. Today it is home to several sport fishing refuges, primarily for salmon and pleuronectiforms. Bamfield is the northern boundary of the West Coast Trail, a trail built in 1907 along the west coast of Vancouver Island to help survivors of shipwrecks in the area find their way back to civilization. The trail runs 77 kilometers along extremely rugged terrain.
