The laureates have developed methods for computers to acquire a basic and crucial human skill: recognizing patterns in large amounts of data, and thus being able to classify them into categories. The goal is for the machine to learn from numerous examples.

SVMs are used today in genomics, in cancer research, in neurology, in the interpretation of medical images – diagnostic imaging – and even in the optimization of AIDS treatments. They are also applied in climate research, geophysics and astrophysics.

As Vapnik explained yesterday by telephone upon learning of the ruling, “the fundamental problem in artificial intelligence is getting the machine to recognize and differentiate objects, such as distinguishing between men and women, or between different medical diagnoses. You can’t provide the machine with the rule to do that, the machine has to learn that rule. The support vector machine was developed precisely to achieve this goal. These tools use active learning algorithms that “learn” the criteria of legal relevance in relation to a particular case by analyzing a subset of statistically significant documents that are previously “coded” manually (i.e., each of them classified as “relevant” or “not relevant”) by a lawyer knowledgeable about the case30 . Based on these examples, the system generates a predictive model that subsequently applies all the documents in the set to be reviewed, classifying them as relevant or not relevant and prioritizing them by assigning each of them a specific degree of probability of relevance, which makes it possible to directly discard those that do not reach a certain minimum degree of probability.
