The purpose of this article is threefold: to give an account of the origins and development of the English School as a historically constituted entity; to synthesize from the writings of some of its early representatives the views of the English School on how historical knowledge relates to the theory and practice of International Relations; and to study the three major historical works of the English School, examining how their contributions relate to theories of International Relations. In the final brief discussion, it is suggested what might be introduced into the research agenda of the English School on the topic of «history and theory».

The origins of the university date back to 1896, when the Royal Technical Institute at Salford was established, a merger of the earlier Salford Working Men’s College, founded in 1858, and Pendleton Mechanic’s Institute, founded in 1850.[2] In the early 20th century, the nine departments that initially existed were Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Applied Mathematics.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the nine departments that initially existed were Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Applied Physics, Mathematics, Chemistry, Architecture, Industrial Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, Decoration and Art. 1,240 students were enrolled in the first year of these departments. In 1921 the Institute was renamed the Royal Technical College of Salford. In 1958 the institution was split into two organizations, the first being the Royal Technical College and the second the Peel Park Technical College, which changed its name first in 1961 to Salford Technical College, then to Saldorf College of Technology in 1970, and finally University College Saldorf in 1992.

The University College Saldorf was established on February 10, 1967, the date of the Royal Charter presented to the institution by Queen Elizabeth II. The first Vice Chancellor was Clifford Whitworth and the first Chancellor, Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.[3] The first Chancellor was Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
