The jury members were persuaded by the clarity and confidence of the proposal submitted to the competition by Hopkins Architects, as well as by the team’s collaborative approach to creating internationally outstanding higher education buildings and the quality of its team that included, among others, well-known engineering and landscape partners, GROSS.MAX.
The five finalist teams that made it to the second stage were asked to submit conceptual proposals for the first phase (construction budget of approximately 188 million pounds), including a master plan and the main buildings for the 10-hectare, 61,120-square-meter city center site.

In the early 1880s, philanthropist Emma Cons and her supporters took over the Royal Victoria Hall (the “Old Vic”), a house of drunken, rowdy melodrama, and converted it into the Royal Victoria Coffee and Music Hall to provide cheap entertainment “purified of innuendo in word and deed.” The program included music hall shifts with opera recitals, temperance meetings, and, beginning in 1882, lectures every Tuesday by eminent scientists.
Local enthusiasm for these “penny lectures” and success in raising substantial philanthropic funds led in 1889 to the opening of the Morley Memorial College for Working Men and Women. The college was founded by a donation from Samuel Morley, MP for Nottingham and later for Bristol. Samuel Morley is buried in Dr. Watts’ Walk, Abney Park Cemetery, Stoke Newington, London.
The College operated separately from the Theatre, but held its classes and student meetings backstage and in the Theatre’s dressing rooms. The two separated in the 1920s, when Lilian Baylis, Emma’s niece and successor, raised funds to purchase a separate venue nearby. It attracted some intellectual celebrities such as Virginia Woolf.
