She was appointed chair of the Senior House Officer program in 1995. During this time she became more involved with the Royal College of Psychiatrists, becoming an examiner for the first part of the examination. Her main area of research is dementia and she is a member of national planning committees for dementia care. She was appointed Associate Medical Director for Doctors in Training at the University of Leeds in 2000. She subsequently took over the second part of the MRCPsych clinical examinations, which required finding psychiatric patients who could be interviewed. Shortly thereafter Burn was appointed Director of the Yorkshire Old Age Psychiatry Training Program.
