Authorities began investigating the possibility that the attack was an act of terrorism. The following day, authorities claimed that Artan was inspired by Islamic State (IS) terrorist propaganda. The Islamic State issued a statement claiming responsibility for the attack, although there is no evidence of direct contact between the group and Artan.
In the week before the attack, the perpetrator, Abdul Razak Ali Artan, traveled to Washington D. C. and purchased a knife at a Home Depot there. The day before the attack, Artan purchased a second knife at a Walmart in Columbus. Investigators have not determined whether one of the knives was used in the attack, but found it particularly suspicious that Artan traveled to the U.S. capital, approximately 400 miles (650 km) from Columbus by car, to purchase a knife.[8] The investigators have not determined whether the knife was used in the attack.
Initial reports had indicated that there was an active shooter incident.[19] At 9:54 a. m. EST, UEO sent out an emergency notification asking students to shelter in place.[20] At 10:19 a. m. EST, police reported that the attacker had been shot and killed by an officer after failing to comply with the officer’s orders to lower his weapon.[18][21][22] An academic advisor who witnessed the attack described seeing the attacker charge at police, who fired several shots at them.[14] The attacker was shot and killed by an officer.
