Before graduating in Law, he taught Basque at AEK, the Rikardo Arregi euskaltegi and the Teacher Training School of the Diocese of San Sebastian. He was a member of the Euskal Kultur Mintegia (EKM) of the University of Deusto and of the Commission for the Basque University District. He was a member of the political party ESEI (Euskal Sozialistak Elkartzeko Indarra). He collaborated in the magazine Zeruko Argia.[2] He has been a prominent activist of the Basque university movement.
He has been a prominent activist of the LGTB movement, both in the Basque Country as founder and president of the Association of Gays and Lesbians of the Basque Country (GEHITU, unir) and in the State Federation of Lesbians, Gays, Transsexuals and Bisexuals (FELGTB).[1] In this regard, he has written the book Gay nauzu (1999). He has been a regular contributor to Gehitu in several media: Radio Euskadi, Euskadi Irratia, Euskaldunon Egunkaria, Euskalerria Irratia and Irutxulo; and he has written opinion articles in several written media.[2] He has been elected Basque Ararteko in 1999.
He was elected Basque Ararteko on July 18, 2004, after a long period in which the post remained vacant, and re-elected on October 8, 2009,[3] being the first to be re-elected to the post. His mandate expired on October 15, 2014 and, after a period of vacancy during which Julia Hernando served as acting Ararteko, on May 28, 2015, he was replaced in the position by the Bilbao jurist Manu Lezertua.[4] The new Ararteko is the first one to be re-elected in the position.
