Before graduating in Law, he taught Basque at AEK, the Rikardo Arregi euskaltegi and the Teacher Training School of the Diocese of San Sebastian. He has been a regular contributor to Gehitu in several media: Radio Euskadi, Euskadi Irratia, Euskaldunon Egunkaria, Euskalerria Irratia and Irutxulo; and he has written opinion articles in several written media.[2] He has been elected Basque Ararteko in 1999.

He was elected Basque Ararteko on July 18, 2004, after a long period in which the post remained vacant, and re-elected on October 8, 2009,[3] being the first to be re-elected to the post. His mandate expired on October 15, 2014 and, after a period of vacancy during which Julia Hernando served as acting Ararteko, on May 28, 2015, he was replaced in the position by the Bilbao jurist Manu Lezertua.[4] The new Ararteko is the first one to be re-elected in the position.
